Treating and dismantling used vehicles

Nissan end of life vehicles are treated conform to the European ELV Directive requirements.

Depollution

First, all liquids are drained – brake fluid, motor oil, transmission oil, and so on. These liquids are carefully collected and kept separate for treatment by specialised recycling companies. In this way, we help prevent contamination of the ground, water, and air.

Then, we remove the tyres, air conditioning gas and all parts containing heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium). These include lead wheel weights, catalytic converters, mercury switches and the battery.

Dismantling

Some parts of the vehicle may still be suitable for second-hand use. After dismantling, these parts are cleaned and checked, then stored for use in other Nissan cars.

Nissan uses standardised tools to make the dismantling process easier. We reduce the fixings, we mark our plastic parts and constantly improve dismantling solutions.

Shredding

Finally the remaining “de-polluted” vehicle is shredded. The shredded output is separated according to material (metal, plastics, and so on). These materials may be further recycled into new car parts or for other purposes.

Facilitating the treatment process for ELV

The recycling activities are supported by the International Dismantling Information System (IDIS) developed in collaboration with 21 car manufacturers. In this IDIS, Nissan provides information on non-metal materials, components and dismantling instructions for dismantling operators.
